Jan 12, 2017: The Nigerian Meteorogical Agency (NIMET) has installed and commissioned the Low Level Wind Shear‎ Alert System (LLWAS) at the Umaru Musa Yar'AduaInternational Airport in Katsina. This brings the number of airports with this facility to 13.

Abuja, Benin, Calabar, Enugu, Ilorin, Kaduna, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Sokoto and Yola are the other airports across the country which have installed this facility. This system detects the unsafe wind shear that drops aircraft in low altitudes.

Nigerian Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika explained that windshear remains one of the most hazardous weather events to aircraft. Sirika further added that wind shear makes it particularly dangerous during takeoff and landing when the aircraft is at low altitudes.

According to a recent study by the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and NIMET, the minister noted that windshear is prevalent in every part of Nigeria even as AIB aircraft accidents investigations also found out that windshear phenomena was linked to some accidents.
