Coronavirus: Astral Aviation to continue freighter operations

Nairobi-based cargo airline Astral Aviation will continue to operate its freighters amid Covid-19, as per a company released dated March 23.

Astral Aviation in compliance with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Directives will operate a limited number of frequencies from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on scheduled routes.

March 24, 2020: Nairobi-based cargo airline Astral Aviation will continue to operate its freighters amid Covid-19, as per a company release dated March 23. 

The carrier in compliance with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Directives will operate a limited number of frequencies from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on scheduled routes. The frequency includes: Juba, Mwanza, and Mogadishu - reduced from 2 to 1 flight per week; Zanzibar and Pemba - each will operate every 2 weeks. 

In addition, Astral will operate full charters within East (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), Central (Rwanda, D.R. Congo, Chad, Central African Republic), Southern (Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Angola, South Africa), Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somaliland, Puntland) & Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte) on its fleet consisting on Fokker 27 F (6 tonnes), DC9F (14 tonnes), B727-200F (22 tonnes), and B747-400F (110 tonnes).

Last December, Astral has operated in excess of 180 humanitarian charters into Yemen in the past 2 years for various organisations and has uplifted in excess of 2,000 tonnes of relief cargoes comprising of vaccines and pharma in addition to food and shelter items.

In 2020, Astral plans to add two B757Fs to its fleet.
