Level 2 accreditation is to encourage airports to reduce their CO2 emissions

June 28, 2018: Liege Airport has been awarded Level 2 accreditation by Airports Council International (ACI) Europe. The certification (Airport Carbon Accreditation), organised in 4 levels was developed to encourage airports to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.

The 4 levels of Airport Carbon Accreditation include mapping, reduction, optimisation and neutrality. In its environmental policy, Liege Airport has defined five lines of action to limit its carbon footprint, viz. rational use of energy; greenhouse gas emissions; air quality; legal and regulatory watch; and  awareness, information and partnership.

In addition to acquainting staff with good environmental practices, numerous actions like office heating by geothermal energy, installation of cogeneration with a heat network, acquisition of electric or hybrid vehicles with the installation of charging stations, purchase of 100 percent green electricity, etc. has brought them to Level 2.

More extensive actions are also under way and confirm the involvement of Liege Airport in fighting climate change and limiting its environmental impact. These include insulation of buildings, installation of automatic shutters, construction of low energy buildings, programming of thermostats and a system of 3 heat recovery tubes, installation of photovoltaic panels, LED lighting and smart switches, installation of a metering station - air quality, waste management, etc.
