The KwaZulu-Natal government and private sector partners launched the Insimbi Ridge Catalytic Project in Cato Ridge on 10 November 2025 to develop a 500-hectare inland logistics precinct that will attract private investment, create up to 10,000 jobs, and modernise freight infrastructure in South Africa.

The event was attended by Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Musa Zondi, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba, business leaders, and community representatives.

The Insimbi Ridge Logistics Precinct forms part of the R10 billion Cato Ridge Development aimed at establishing a logistics hub and dry port to ease congestion at the Port of Durban. The project, jointly driven by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, Assore SA PropCo, Rail Development Corporation and FPT Group, will support the province’s Investment Strategy 2030 and Strategic Integrated Project 2 to expand rail freight connectivity.

MEC Zondi described the initiative as “a working model for progress and a testament to the power of collaboration.” He said the development reflects inclusive growth and strong environmental governance through the redevelopment of the former Cato Ridge Works site.

Mayor Xaba said the precinct would play a key role in shifting freight transport from road to rail while generating employment for local communities within the KwaXimba Traditional Council area. The project is expected to create 5,000 jobs during construction and 10,000 once operational, with emphasis on small business participation.
