AGL inaugurates expanded US$1.5B Tema Port in Ghana
The upgraded Terminal 3 boosts capacity to 3 million TEUs, enhancing West Africa’s trade efficiency and regional connectivity.

AGL has marked a major step forward for Africa’s maritime and trade landscape with the official inauguration of Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port expansion in Ghana. The project, executed by Meridian Port Services (MPS) through a strong public-private partnership, represents a US$1.5 billion investment and reinforces Ghana’s position as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.
The upgraded Terminal 3 introduces significant new capacity and infrastructure that will support the continent’s growing trade flows. The terminal now spans 127 hectares of additional space and features a 1.4-kilometre quay with four ultra-modern berths. Its handling capability has risen sharply from 800,000 TEUs to 3 million TEUs, placing the facility among the most advanced and efficient in the region.
The inauguration brought together key national and industry leaders, highlighting the importance of the port to Ghana and its neighbours. President John Dramani Mahama joined Transport Minister Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, AGL Chairman Philippe Labonne and MPS CEO Mohamed Samara to celebrate the completion of this major development.
Speaking at the ceremony, Philippe Labonne, President of AGL, said the expanded platform would strengthen connectivity across the continent and support Africa’s ambition to boost intra-African commerce. He described the upgraded port as a sustainable engine of growth for the region.
The expanded Tema Port has also been recognised as a “Green Terminal”, underscoring its focus on innovation and sustainability. With its new infrastructure and modern capabilities, the port is expected to unlock fresh opportunities for Ghana, West Africa and the Sahel, supporting smoother logistics and more efficient trade across the region.
