Aug 17, 2018: Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced that Port of Mombasa has recorded enormous growth in container traffic, cargo volumes and revenue over the past six years.

The port generated monthly revenue of just over US$ 496 million in July this year, a significant increase on its average monthly revenue of over US$ 297 million.

“In 2012, the port handled 900,000 TEUs and by the end of 2017 it had handled 1.2 million TEUs, an increase of about 32 percent. The cargo volume in deadweight tonnes also increased from 21 million in 2012 to 30 million in the same period,” said Mombasa port chairman, James Mwangi.

KPA acting MD, Daniel Manduku, said that this massive improvement could largely be attributed to improved cargo clearance processes and noted that the East African port had broken four world records in cargo handling just in the last two months.
