How VietJet Air Cargo is navigating tariffs & trade shifts, explains Nelson Wu
At transport logistic and air cargo Southeast Asia 2025 in Singapore, Nelson Wu, Managing Director of VietJet Air Cargo, spoke with Rajarshi Chatterjee, Assistant Editor at STAT Publishing Group, about how changing tariffs, geopolitics and shifting trade patterns are reshaping air cargo flows from Vietnam.
Wu explained how recent tariff-driven volatility has impacted apparel, footwear and electronics exports, and how VietJet Air Cargo, as a belly carrier, is responding through agile capacity management, AI-based forecasting and real-time pricing adjustments. He also shared his views on the structural impact of the China+1 strategy, highlighting the growing importance of compliance, documentation accuracy and resilient network design.
He also mentioned that “the US is still Vietnam’s biggest outlet, even with tariff noise,” while intra-Asia demand continues to support long-haul connections to Europe and North America.
The discussion covered Vietnam’s renewed textile export momentum, evolving demand across US and intra-Asia markets, and operational challenges at Tan Son Nhat Airport as the industry prepares for the transition to Long Thanh International Airport. Wu outlined how technology adoption, including AIRCAM and SmartKargo’s cargo platform, is improving visibility, booking efficiency and service reliability for forwarders and shippers.
He also spoke about VietJet Air Cargo’s expanding partnerships with global airlines and integrators, strengthening connectivity to Europe, North America and the Middle East, and shared his perspective on Vietnam’s long-term role as a key manufacturing and logistics hub.
