January 18, 2021: Kisumu International Airport is set to build a transit cargo shed that is expected to unlock the facility’s cargo handling potential and increase revenue.

Top officials from the Fresh Produce, Horticultural and Flower Council will gather this week in Kisumu to discuss cargo and commercial strategies to support the development.

The team, which is led by Okisegere Ojepat, CEO of Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya (FPC Kenya)  also made a courtesy call to Kisumu county governor, Anyang' Nyongo in a bid to cement new partnerships with the county government on production and marketing of fresh produce within the lake Region Economic Block.

KAA's regional airport manager, western region, Selina Gor, noted that the introduction of cargo at Kisumu Airport would go a long way to boost activities at the airport.

While commenting on the same, Kenya Airports Authority’s (KAA) marketing and business development general manager, Jimmy Kibati said that the authority is keen to develop its cargo capacity at all major airports in the country.

"We have over the past couple of months held engagement sessions with our cargo stakeholders in the various airports we operate, in a bid to build the cargo network in Kenya," he said.

The expansion of Kisumu International Airport will be a key for the development of the region as it gives hope to farmers in the area.
