Kenya targets German market with new export readiness programme
The programme comes at a time when trade ties between Kenya and Germany are strengthening, with Kenya's exports to Germany reaching $164.8 million in 2025, up 16% from the previous year.
Twenty-two Kenyan companies have joined the Partnering in Business with Germany Programme, an export readiness initiative aimed at helping local businesses develop opportunities in the German market, according to the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA).
The two-day introductory workshop was held at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, bringing together exporters from sectors including tea, fresh produce, herbs and spices, horticulture, agro-processing and crafts. According to KEPROBA, the programme is implemented on behalf of Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy through GIZ and delivered by AHP International, in partnership with KEPROBA.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, KEPROBA Chief Executive Officer Floice Mukabana said the programme is designed to provide participating exporters with knowledge, practical skills and confidence to establish business partnerships with German companies.
The 22 companies were selected following a nationwide application process. KEPROBA said it and GIZ received 102 applications, with 40 companies shortlisted before virtual interviews and field verification visits were conducted. The final selection comprised 22 businesses considered to have demonstrated the capacity and readiness to compete in international markets.
The programme comes as Kenya seeks to expand its trade relationship with Germany. KEPROBA said Kenya's exports to Germany reached $164.8 million in 2025, representing a 16% increase from the previous year. Kenya's export basket to Germany continues to include coffee, cut flowers, avocados, mangoes and other fresh produce, while value-added products are also gaining ground.
According to Mukabana, Germany remains an important trading partner for Kenya in Europe, while the existing export figures indicate further scope to expand bilateral trade. The agency said opportunities remain to diversify Kenya's exports, increase value addition and expand the presence of Kenyan businesses in international markets.
The export readiness programme is aimed at supporting companies as they explore these opportunities and build potential commercial relationships with German businesses.
